Mama Sheepadoodle

A new blog!

After thinking about it for a long time I've finally decided to start a blog for our Sheepadoodles. I hope this blog is able to give you glimpses into our life raising the perfect (just slightly biased ;-) ) Sheepadoodle puppies, and can keep you updated with photos and videos of our puppies!

For this first post I guess I'll introduce myself, our family, and our program. I'm a stay at home mom, to four kids ages 1-10, and we live on a few acres in the middle-of-no-where Tennessee. We love the small town culture and as transplants from out west, we are getting used to how much of a role Dollar General plays in our daily lives ;-). We are also busy learning about ticks, swimming holes and tornado warnings.

We have several dogs in our Sheepadoodle program, and we produce both F1, and F1b puppies. We specialize in Black/Tan/White Sheepadoodles, also known as Tri-Color. You are probably used to seeing Tri-Color Bernadoodle puppies, but a Tri-Color SHEEPadoodle is something of a unicorn. Precious few OES (Old English Sheepdogs) carry the correct genetics to produce Tri-Color puppies! But it just so happens that our girl Blueberry is one of these unicorns! Here is a picture of one of our Tri-Color Sheepadoodles from a previous litter! Isn't he stunning?

Let's talk for a minute about the differences between an F1 and an F1b puppy. An F1 Sheepadoodle is the puppy that results from one parent being a Poodle, and the other parent being an Old English Sheepdog. Because neither the OES or the Poodle shed, these first generation puppies wont shed either. You may find a har or two around the house occasionally, but they don't blow their coat twice a year like a Labrador Retriever does.

An F1b, is when an F1 puppy is bred to a Poodle. Mathmatically it would seem these pups should be 2/3 Poodle and 1/3 Old English Sheepdog, but genetics can be funny and on a DNA test this generation of Sheepadoodle may show more of one parents genetics than we expect. But an F1b will be very hypo allergenic thanks to all of the Poodle! (Of course nothing is as hypo allergenic as a pure bred poodle though.)

So which generation is right for you? In most other doodles people chose an F1b to eliminate shedding, but since F1 Sheepadoodles don't shed, either generation is a wonderful choice!

To wrap up this first ever blog post I'll leave you a little teaser of an update that's coming soon!
